Game highlights
The Indomitable Lions were unfortunate to lose after an enterprising display at the Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar.
Yet Switzerland struggled in the first half, in which Cameroon began with greater chances and approach, with Eric Choupo-Moting, Bryan Mbeumo and Martin Hongla had their open chances missed.
Bryan Mbeumo blasted at Sommer and Karl Toko Ekambi inexplicably fired over on the rebound.
Undeterred, Cameroon continued to look more threatening, with Martin Hongla testing Sommer from a tight angle 20 minutes later, and a crucial Silvan Widmer clearance denied Toko Ekambi a tap-in.
Toward the finishing first half, Switzerland was surprisingly better.
However, and only a last-ditch Jean-Charles Castelletto tackle prevented Embolo a certain goal before Manuel Akanji nodded just wide in stoppage time.
When it came to goal, the European side was much more crucial.
Just after the break, Embolo swept home easily from Xherdan Shaqiri’s quality low right-wing cross to break the deadlock.
The goal rocked Cameroon and the Swiss had chances to extend their lead, only for Andre Onana to save superbly from Ruben Vargas, while Embolo and substitute Haris Seferovic were denied by last-ditch defending.
The Indomitable Lions have now lost eight successive games at the World Cup finals.

Embolo moved to Switzerland from Cameroon with his family as a six-year-old and pledged his allegiance to the European nation after being granted citizenship in 2014.
Being grateful to his origin, 18-year-old Embolo then set up the Embolo Foundation to support refugee children in Switzerland and disadvantaged children in the country of his birth.
“A very special game”, Embolo said ahead of the clash against Cameroon. When he scored, he respectfully raised his arms and closed his eyes. What a man, what a player!
Next game tough for both
Choupo-Mouting and co still stood up to a chance to become the first Cameroon side to progress beyond the group stage since 1990, despite the slim hope.
For Switzerland, a victory helps them with more space to breathe, knowing their next to face would be World Cup’s favourites Brazil.
