World Cup 2022 Highlights – Germany 1-2 Japan

One day after Saudi Arabia shocking beat Argentina, Japan rocked the World Cup with victory against Germany.

World Cup 2022 highlights – Germany 1-2 Japan as Bundesliga duo stunned Die Mannschaft.

Japan staged a sensational fightback to deal Germany a shock 2-1 defeat in their World Cup opener as Bundesliga players Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano came off the bench to stun the four-time winners.

The rise of Asian, as many would say, the 2022 World Cup so far has seen two shocking defeats of the South American and European giants, all in the hands of Asian teams.

Game highlights

Germany made headlines by covering their mouths in a pre-match protest against FIFA’s decision to ban Manuel Neuer from wearing the OneLove armband.

They also looked set to make a positive start in Group E when Ilkay Gundogan converted a first-half penalty.

Germany’s gesture to no ‘One love’ armband by host Qatar

Goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda committed a clumsy foul on David Raum to hand Germany a spot-kick, which Gundogan calmly converted.

Kai Havertz put the ball in the back of the net, however, a VAR review denied Germany a second as the Chelsea’s man was offside.

Gundogan hit the base of the post after the restart and then Gonda denied Gnabry three times in quick succession as Germany continued to create chances.

But Japan stunned them at the other end as Doan capitalised on a rebound to fire into the roof of the net.

The Freiburg forward made Hansi Flick’s side pay from a rebound 15 minutes from time.

With Germany chasing a winner, there was to be one final twist as Asano raced onto a long ball before firing beyond Neuer.

It started with Niklas Sule’s woeful positioning allowed Asano to stay onside from a long ball, and he hammered beyond Neuer to seal a famous win.

The goal was too good to be true as it left Die Mannschaft under huge pressure ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Spain.

Rudiger’s run and the instant Karma

It’s good to mention Antonio Rudiger’s run and mock at Asano, only minutes before the equalizer and the eventual goal by the Japanese ace.

Some said it’s karma that came quick, well, it might very well be.
