Grading Group D teams after MD 1
‘Undermanned’ France showed its fangs. Tunisia and Denmark played to a scoreless draw, or did they?
Those and more are what happened on Group D’s first matchday at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
France (A+)
Nothing says masterclass more than coming back from an early deficit then trouncing the opponent.
Olivier Giroud’s brace tied him with Thierry Henry as Les Bleus’ all-time top scorer. Kylian Mbappé continued where he left off four years ago – being a constant and viable goalscoring threat.
Whatever voodoo was bugging France looks like has no effect in Qatar. Maybe they really are legit.
Denmark (B)
As what has been pointed out twice, how the offside violation has been called in this edition has been a pain.
You think you already scored? How about, “No”.
Personally, I prefer it this way. Because there would no longer be talk of missed calls and such.
Tunisia (B)

Yes, we repeated ourselves because both teams got bit by the offside bug.
Conversely, instead of nil-nil, the fixture is instead 1-1. Guessing it is just the same regardless. The only time the scoreline would matter is when the group goes deep into the tiebreakers that the final seeding would be decided by goals scored.
Australia (C)
The Socceroos tried; for 26 minutes they were into it. If only they pulled it off completely, AFC member countries would have jumped to two wins in a matter of a day.
Alas, it was not meant to be.
What is your take? Would you have changed anything from the grades we gave?
