It was a huge performance for England, with Jude Bellingham’s opening goal, a brace by Bukayo Saka and strikes from Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish.

Game Highlights
England had come close to taking the lead in the Group B opener, with Harry Maguire heading against the crossbar, before Bellingham, steered in a header from a Luke Shaw cross in the 35th minute.
The Borussia Dortmund’s star was was 14 years old during the 2018 World Cup. 4 years later, Bellingham scored his first at the World Cup 2022.
Eight minutes later, England doubled their lead when Maguire climbed highest from a corner to head down for Arsenal’s Saka to score.
After the break, it was already three to nil, in a one-sided first half for England.
Sterling flicked in a cross by captain Harry Kane in first-half stoppage time before Saka bamboozled Iran’s defence and made it 4-0 in the 62nd minute.
498 days ago, Bukayo Saka suffered racial abuse online for missing a penalty in the Euros final. Now, he has a brace in England’s World Cup opener, in the game he was picked ahead of on-form Phil Foden in the staring XI.
Iran’s talisman Mehdi Taremi narrowed the gap for Iran three minutes later but Rashford made it 5-1 and Grealish, also coming off the bench, scored England’s sixth.
Taremi also registered a brace as he scored a consolation second goal for Iran from the penalty spot in the dying seconds.
Strong start for Three Lions
It was a fine and dominant performance for Gareth Southgate’s men in the opening game of 2022 World Cup.

The USA are England’s next opponents, that match taking place at 7pm GMT on Friday evening.
Gareth Southgate’s side then play their final group-stage match against Wales a week tomorrow.
