World Cup 2022 Stadium – Al Thumama Stadium Profile
Located just 12 kilometers from its fabled skyline, Al Thumama Stadium is nestled in its namesake planned district of Doha, and it will seat 40,000 spectators for the World Cup finals.
The Stadium’s design was based on the ghafiya, a traditional cap worn by men and boys around the Middle East. The woven details of the cap were on its exterior which makes stood out among the playing venues in Qatar.
Inaugurated in 2021, its first match was the Amir Cup final, where then-Al Sadd boss Xavi lifted his seventh and final trophy with the club after a pulsating shootout win over archrivals Al Rayyan.
Furthermore, the venue hosted six matches in the Arab Cup, including the dramatic semifinal on December 15 in which eventual winners Algeria pipped the hosts with a very late winner by Youcef Belaili in front of more than 42 thousand fans.
The stadium will host eight matches from the group stages until the last quarterfinal on December 15, 2022. Afterward, its capacity will be halved as its surrounding spaces will be repurposed as an active hub for the community.
